Second Language Acquisition: linguistic know-how

Finally, I've got a basic strategy when confronting with new foreign languages:
  • Grasp the typological status of that language at first.
  • List and utilize available language resources , together with digital learning tools. Such as corpus, wordnet, thesaurus, Podcasting, Web-based lexicographical tools, etc.
  • Determine the "meta-language" (which is linguistic similar to the target language) you will use.
  • Set up the goals to be achieved, select the elementary literary works with multilingual translation (e.g., The Little Prince) ; select the advanced/classic works to motivate your further learning steps.
  • Extract the basic statistics of vocabulary and some significant language behaviour.
  • Learn the components of that language in a generative way: phonetic/phonology, grammar(syntax+morphology) , etc; Learn the script in parallel.
  • Absorb practical experiences from the field of contrastive analysis.
  • Construct the ontology and lexicon for that (endangered) language, if possible.
